Data protection notice

This site is built to work without collecting personal data. This notice sets out what that means in practice, what happens when you contact us, and how to exercise your rights.

Reviewed 12 June 2026 · sources dated in text · general information only

Who is responsible

The controller for any personal data processed in connection with this website is the publishing company named on the contact page, at the registered address shown there. Questions about this notice, and requests to exercise the rights described below, can be sent to the electronic mail address published on that page.

This notice describes the position of this website only. It does not cover any third-party site reached from here, and it is a description of practice rather than legal advice.

What is not collected

The site installs no advertising technology, no analytics service, no tag manager, no social plug-ins, no embedded video or map frames, no external fonts and no third-party scripts of any kind. There is no account system, no login and no newsletter subscription. The contact page carries an enquiry form, described in its own section below; nothing else on the site asks for personal data.

It follows that the site does not build a profile of you, does not track you across sites, does not sell or share data with advertising partners and does not use automated decision-making. Any figure you type into a calculator on this site is processed in your browser and is never transmitted, because there is no application server to receive it.

Technical data in server logs

Delivering any web page requires a request between your device and a server, and hosting infrastructure records such requests for security and operational reasons. Those records can include an internet protocol address, the date and time of a request, the file requested, a response code, an approximate volume of data and a user-agent string.

This data is generated by the hosting provider acting as a processor, is used only to keep the service running and secure and to investigate faults or abuse, is not combined with anything else, is not used to identify individual readers and is not used for any analytical or commercial purpose. The legal basis is the legitimate interest in operating a secure website, and retention is limited to the short period the provider requires for those purposes.

Storage on your device

Two items may be stored on your device, both of them a record of a choice you have made. The first records that the entry notice has been acknowledged, so that it does not appear on every page. The second records your cookie preference, so that the banner is not shown again. Both are described key by key on the cookies page, including their type, duration and purpose.

The item recording the entry notice is stored in local storage and, redundantly, as a first-party cookie with a lifetime of one year, so that the notice does not reappear if local storage is unavailable. Neither item contains an identifier, and neither is readable by any third party. You can remove both at any time by clearing site data in your browser or by using the reset control on the cookies page.

Consent signals

Every page initialises a consent state before anything else runs. Advertising storage, advertising user data and advertising personalisation are set to denied, and they remain denied permanently: there is no mechanism on this site by which they can be granted, because no advertising technology is present to use them.

Analytics storage also starts as denied. Functionality and security storage are granted, since they cover the storage of your own preferences and the basic security of the connection. The state is initialised with a short waiting period so that no component could act before it is applied. If an analytics tool were ever introduced, it would load only after an explicit choice to allow it, that choice would be recorded, and this notice would be updated before any such tool was installed.

When you write to us

If you send an electronic mail, we process the address you write from, the content of your message and any attachment. For an editorial correction the basis is the legitimate interest in the accuracy of published material; for a request about your own data it is compliance with a legal obligation; for a general enquiry it is the legitimate interest in answering it.

The enquiry form on the contact page asks for four things: a name, an electronic mail address, the subject of the enquiry and the message itself. They are used only to answer what you have written, on the same legal bases as above, and are never used for marketing, added to any list or passed to anyone beyond the hosting and mail providers described below.

Correspondence from either channel is retained only as long as needed to deal with the matter and to keep a record of how a correction was handled, after which it is deleted. Please do not send confidential documents, health information, credentials or material that could identify a protected source: this project is not equipped to receive material requiring protection, and neither the form nor ordinary email is a secure channel.

Recipients and transfers

There are no recipients of personal data beyond the hosting provider that serves the pages and the electronic mail provider that carries correspondence, each acting under a contract as a processor. No data is disclosed for marketing, no data is sold, and no data is shared with any organisation described in the site's material.

Where a provider processes data outside the European Economic Area, that processing is covered by the transfer mechanisms provided for in the applicable framework. Details of the current providers are available on request through the contact page.

Making a request or a complaint

Requests can be sent to the address on the contact page and are answered within the periods set by the applicable framework. Proportionate verification of identity may be necessary, limited to what is required to avoid disclosing information to someone not entitled to it.

If you are not satisfied with how a request has been handled, you may complain to the Irish supervisory authority, the Data Protection Commission, or to the authority in the member state where you live or work. Nothing in this notice restricts that right, and this notice is general information rather than legal advice on your particular circumstances.
